International Women Seafarers Foundation
We are pleased to invite you to the yearly event of International Women Seafarers Foundation “Vision Connect-Kolkata 2018” on 28th September 2018 at 3:00 pm in Auditorium, IMU (MERI),P-19,Taratala Road, Kolkata. The Event will be graced by Mr. Sabyasachi Hajara, Ex. Chairman – SCI, Adviser to Apeejay Shipping.
The International Women Seafarers Foundation has been conceived with the intention of promoting and supporting women seafarers in their shipping career. A woman is faced with numerous challenges in their pursuit of a sailing career. We aim to understand and overcome the challenges faced by young lady seafarers and companies employing them.
The IWSF aims to:
- Support and Guide fellow seafarers and sailing women, understand challenges on board ships and learn to take right steps at right time.
- Guide and mentor young women seafarers embracing the shipping career during their adventurous journey in the maritime sector.
- Assist Companies bridge policy gaps for women seafarers on board and create awareness
- Assist Government and Institutions in promoting education and policies related to women.
- Promote and assist government in their mission and focus on empowerment of women.
- Assist government and policy makers formulating rules & regulations to the views of women seafarers and work against gender discrimination, if any.
- Increase visibility and presence of Women Seafarers in the Maritime sector.
We, at International Women Seafarers Foundation, are committed to cause of promoting women seafarers on board and developing their career ashore.

Introduction of Founding members
Ms. Suneeti Bala:
An Extra First Class, Ex-Marine/Class Surveyor & Auditor, is DMET (MERI-Kolkata) alumni. She started her sailing career at Chevron shipping. After going through regular MEO Examination, she finally reached up to Chief engineer and become 1st Indian lady Chief Engineer sailing on board MT Albert Ekka PVC of Shipping corporation of India Ltd.
Towards her Challenging shore career, she joined Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), Mumbai station as 1st lady field surveyor. Progressing her career in IRClass she served in IRClass head office till Senior surveyor. Presently working as Marine Manager (Team Lead) Operations in a Danish Giant and Governing Council Member of Institute of Marine Engineers.
Capt Radhika Menon:
She is first lady Master of India. 27 years in shipping. Sailing as Master since 2012. First woman to receive gallantry at sea award NMDC 2016. First woman from the world to be conferred with International Maritime Organization Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea 2016. For conducting rescue operation which saved lives of 7 fishermen in stormy weather in Bay of Bengal, in year2015.
She has been awarded with USCG Medal for Rescue operation, Panna Dhai National award 2017 by Maharana of Mewar Foundation, Indian Express DEVI Award 2016 for woman of innovation and dynamism and Maritime Excellence award Indywood. Has served as Vice president of Maritime Union of India for two consecutive tenures. Presently serving as their executive committee member. Will be conferred with first woman achiever award by Govt. of India in Nov 2017.
Ms. Sharvani Mishra:
From joining as one of the only two female cadets from the pioneer batch of Tolani Maritime Institute, to becoming the first lady engineer to sail on an Indian flag ship, Sharvani Mishra has come far with a vast sailing and on-shore experience in various disciplines of maritime industry. Her fortes include both, ship management and chartering.
In addition to being conferred with recognitions as a speaker in various conferences and forums, she is an active member of International Association of Maritime Economists and Institute of Marine Engineers. With an innate capacity for organization, good communication and a strength of character right from her cadet days, she boasts great leadership qualities. Owing which we have her as one of the first to conceptualize the idea of bringing the woman seafarer community on to a single communication platform.
